Christmas True and False (Part Three)
December 10th 2008 21:50
Here’s a classic:
“Jesus wasn’t born in December.” TRUE
So, you may ask, why do we celebrate Christmas in December? Well, the easy answer is that, much like several other holidays like presidential birthdays and such, we ‘reserve’ a certain day even though it might not be the actual day of birth. The long answer is that in biblical times a different type of calendar was used. The New Year started not in the winter but in the summer. Jesus was born prior to the New Year and so with our calendar now December is just before the New Year it made sense at the time that Christ’s birth be reserved.
