By definition to covet or to be covetous means the desire to have something that someone else has or to be greedy and possessive.
There are many scriptures that can help a Christian understand this better and help them to see how God despises this action. For further reading on this subject please get out your bibles, open to the following and read:
Psalms 10
1 Corinthians 5 and 6
Mark 7
Luke 12
Romans 1
2 Corinthians 9
Ephesians 5

Colossians 3:1-2
If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
Set your affections on things above, not on things on the earth.
If we let covetousness get in our hearts then that opens the door to jealousy, envy. Then what will we do to optain what others have? Will we steal, cheat, and lie? Will we Commit murder? Nothing good can come from covetousness.
