Materialism
October 22nd 2008 22:45
We are still studying the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew chapter 6. We can see how Jesus explains the wickedness of materialism in verses 19-24. He teaches a number of things such as EVERYTHING is perishable here on earth. Everything we have, everyone we see, all the money we earn, it is all temporary. We are to store up treasure in heaven not in earth. For a more in depth look at what treasure in heaven means look in 1 Peter 1:4
Everything we have, every one in our lives, all of it has been given by God. We are to be good stewards of the people and possessions. We are to hold everything and all people loosely. Remember the Lord giveth, the Lord taketh away. Te only thing we should be devoted to and cherish is God, everything else is selfishness and idolatry. You see, if there is one primary message in this passage it is that we will always be wanting and never be satisfied the more our appetites for earthly possessions grow. The only way to be satisfies is to understand that all these things will fade and nothing is truly ours except our relationship with God.
Wicked Behavior:
1. covetous
2. materialism
3. selfishness
4. desire
5. always wanting more
And finally in verse 24 ‘who do you serve’? You can’t serve two masters. Only one, and if you choose to live your life this way it is clear that you don’t serve God.
