Remember the Reason for the Season Part Three: Pagan Holiday

December 19th 2010 00:27

Yet another thing we often hear at Christmas time is that Christians stole the holiday from pagans. I sit and shake my head at the ridiculous claim. It would be funny if it weren't so sad that people actually buy that. I know someone that was born on the 4th of July, so is that person a thief because he celebrates the day as his birthday? Of course not. Pagan's celebrate all of the different seasons, so does that mean that all of the holidays celebrated within those pagan celebration times are stolen from them too? Absurd! You can not “steal” a day. Days belong to everyone no one type of people or group own a day. In order for something to be stolen, it must be owned by another.

This is yet another way for people to attack Christians. It is a pathetic attempt to make Christians out to be something they're not. As Christians we are to stand up when lies are told and proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ. Yes, it is difficult as the followers of Satan are everywhere and they are working hard to take our eyes off of the truth.

It is likely that Christ was actually born around April. Historically, his birth was not always celebrated in December.
When Catholicism started its migration northward with the Roman expansion and came to the land of the Anglo/Saxons (Britania, they called it), they were creating converts. During the month of December, they noticed that pagans had a celebration known as the Yule-tide season in which druidic people would go into the forest and light candles in glass globes and hang them from trees in the forest, (specifically EVERGREENS) because they did not think those "died" in the winter, i.e. our Christmas tree tradition. Likewise, they noticed that some good must have come into the world shortly after the winter solstice. (December 23) because by December 25, the days were getting longer.
Catholics modified the day of celebration of Christ's birth to coincide to give the pagans an explaination. What the pagans were told was that the reason that more light came into the world was because Christ was born onto this Earth and they shared the story. The Church did not change the celebratory day. THE PEOPLE changed it for them because they were celebrating the season of Yule when light and life begins to return to the land and darkness and evil is being defeated by the forces of good.
For those who say the Church stole this day, they simply do not know anything about history.

They don't know much about Christianity, either. Thank you for the comment.
