Romans 13:1-10: A Christian's Duty
July 3rd 2011 18:19
Let's read through Romans 13:1-10 today. This is interesting. It gives us a wonderful idea of our role in a secular world and what our duty is.
Scripture teaches that every person is submissive to someone. Throughout our lives we are always submissive to someone. In verses 1-5, we see the submissive aspect of our duty. At the time Paul wrote this, Nero was in charge. Christians were greatly persecuted. But, Paul still illustrated the importance of realizing and embracing our humble position. However, we are only to be submissive as long as it does not go against the teachings of God (Acts 5:25-29). God always comes first.
We also need to realize that God is in control. He uses ALL things according to His will. Even when evil people are elected in power or find themselves over us in life, God will use everyone to fulfill His will. Look into scripture and see how much prophecy proves this point.
We are to obey God first and foremost, but also all government laws over us are also to be obeyed just so long as it does not conflict.
Then, we see the supportive aspect in verses 6-7. We are to render monetary support and moral support. In verses 8-10, the spiritual aspect of our duty is brought forth. We are a liberated people and we are to be loving to people. We are not to tolerate the wicked ways by any means but we are teach them in love.
