In Nehemiah chapter 3 we see ten gates. Each represents something to us today. Let’s look at this quick study into what these gates symbolize to us.
1. The Sheep Gate: this was a sacrificial area and it is symbolic to Jesus and the crucifixion.
2. The Fish Gate: symbolizes Jesus’ teachings such as “Follow Me and I will make you fishers of men.” The teaching of discipleship.
3. The Old Gate: (Jeremiah 6) is symbolic of the old ways/tradition. Keeping to the old ways. Also that all people, from all walks of life, can work for God side by side.
4. The Valley Gate: this represents humility and looking out for others- everyone must walk through it.
5. The Dung Gate: this represents the way we are cleansed. We rid ourselves of sin and garbage (everything impure).
6. The Fountain Gate: symbolizes the refreshing and clean spirit and heart to do God’s work.
7. The Water Gate: this is the fluidity of God’s word and the spirit being cleansed by the truth.
8. The Horse Gate: this represents warfare. This is the soldier’s gate. The Lord’s army rallies here – the army is the church and its faithful members.
9. The East Gate: this symbolizes the significance of the darkness breaking for the light. When Christians go home to be with Jesus for eternity.
10. The Hammiphkad Gate: this represents the registry. When we are all counted for our works and we are judged.
