What Makes a Christian?
April 7th 2008 03:04
This question is asked by many. Some of those that ask are merely antagonistic but others honestly would like to know what defines a Christians. What makes a Christian, well, a Christian. This post will help clear that up by a biblical stand point.
First, in order to be a Christian we must take the first step and come to Him honestly. We must seek Him with real emotion and desire to know more.
Then a clear understanding of the fact tat God is in control is a mandatory realization. He is the boss of a Christians life… not the person. The term “picking up our cross and following Jesus” (as He asked us to do) means to deny ourselves. Forget about the sins of the flesh. He will always take care of us as long as we accept the fact that our lives become a living sacrifice for Him. We are to do good deeds in His name as the bible teaches.
We have been commanded to “go and make disciples” and so we should. We should stand against wickedness wherever we find it and we should stand up for righteousness as well. We should freely talk to people about the sacrifice that Jesus made for us and the sacrifice that God made by giving us His only son. If we display shamed tendencies and refuse to teach others or educate them on the word of God then He too shall be ashamed of us when we are to be judged.
We also should never mix man’s word with biblical teachings. Man often times makes laws for vanity, selfishness and convenience. God has made laws for the good of all people. If something doesn’t sound right go to God and ask. If someone tries to convince you that something in the bible ‘means’ something that seems out of character for God or the teachings of Jesus Christ then have the common sense to know better and avoid the questionable behavior. If the bible isn’t clear or you have doubt then it is better NOT to allow yourself to be snared by the wicked and just allow God to guide you. He won’t allow anything to happen to you that He doesn’t want. Everything that happens to us is to change us into the person we need to be.

To my mind, this is just your interpretation of what it means to be a Christian. Although I agree with some of what you have written here, my interpretation would be slightly different. To be a Christian is to follow Jesus. To seek to practice his way of life, to seek to follow his teachings.
And yes, I do agree that we need to accept him into our hearts and give our lives over to him. That is the first and foremost thing. But beyond that, being a Christian is simply a matter of trying to become more and more Christlike.

I am familiar with the scripture you referenced in your comment Samaritan. But, this is was not designed to be based upon that specific scripture. As you can see there is a broader spectrum here with many scriptures that explain the point I am trying to make.
Thank you both for reading.
