When and Why We Celebrate Christmas
December 25th 2010 17:56
What is the reason for the season? This is a powerful and wonderful answer. If you think that it was to celebrate Christ's life from the time it began, then you're right. If you thought it was to celebrate only his birth, you're wrong. I've talked a little before about the difference in the calendars used at the time that Christ lived and the one we use now and the fact that even when delving into this issue it still comes back around to celebrating Jesus on December 25th. But, I am not going to go into that today because I think we have covered this territory. No, today, I am going to share with you scriptural evidence that we celebrate Christ's life at the time of conception.
In Luke Chapter one, we see that Mary is visited by an angel that told her that she would be with child. After this encounter she traveled to see her cousin Elisabeth. When she arrived Elisabeth said that the baby in her womb (John the baptist) “leapt for joy” when Mary had entered the house because at that time she was pregnant with Jesus. - When we further read through the book of Luke we see shortly thereafter, in verse 56, three months later John the Baptist was born. If you have studied exhaustive concordances or if you have a companion bible which explains further the dates and other details according to the facts and records, then you would see that John the baptist was born in March during the Spring Equinox. Exactly three months from the end of December. Also, in these records it is written that Christ's birthday was the end of September. December 25 is a high holy day because it was the day in which Jesus' life began here on earth. It was the day of conception.
So, as we celebrate the life of Jesus Christ, it is important to remember that Christians celebrate life at the time of conception, not merely at the time of birth. Life is important when God makes it, not when it takes its first breath of air.
This High Holy day is celebrated because of the great gift that God gave us, His son. There is no greater love or gift that can match His love and Christ's gift of salvation.
